Use your time wisely and remember that Sunday is your ABSOLUTE final deadline to upload your books. Jenny will purchase them first thing Monday and they should arrive by the beginning of the Fall Term. Please stop by my office during that first week to collect them!
It was a great class gang! Be well!
Sincerely,
Valerie

Assignment #9 DUE Aug 3rd!
Still in SF,
I was hoping to see book layouts from those of you working with BLURB. (See Sabra's last post, as she has a nice example of what we need posted next week.) If I was not clear, I apologize, but this is what I am expecting for next week. Please put it together and if you have any questions or problems you may contact me or see Ian.
For those of you that are making your book objects, I would need to see clear documentation of your "books" posted on your book blogs.
I am expecting that EACH of you comment on each others final draft of the book. It is unfortunate that you all expect feedback but only a few are willing to take the time to give it. This is your FINAL CRIT. It will not bode well if you do not take it seriously.
I am very proud of all of this work. There is some great stuff here. You should all feel very good about the progress. Good luck in your final week!
We will have a nice get together and show of the hard work as soon as school starts so hang onto your work!
Val

Assignment #8 DUE July 27th!
Greetings from San Francisco! (finally!)
Now that we know that most of our 84 blogs are truly solid, visually and conceptually interesting, we can leave them to their own devises for the rest of this course. I will continue to grade them each week for new posts, but we will no longer visit them for critique. I am truly ecstatic about the growth that we have seen there.
So now let us make these books beautiful, smart, inventive and well designed.
Those of you making your books with BLURB you are to follow these instructions for next week: Download the template from BLURB and begin your layout (include front and back cover). It is MANDATORY that you take it to IAN (he is waiting for you) in the lab for help with layout and direction before you put the spreads up for critique. NOTE that I have extended our due date to accommodate this. (I will still check both blogs for your weekly set, next Tuesday.)
Those of you that are not making books with BLURB, you are to follow these instructions for next week:
Begin physical construction/printing of your books. If you are printing images please do so at school, as your fees have paid for you to use the lab. Some of you might find it conceptually sound to make prints at Wallgreens and that is fine if you are looking for that effect. But anything experimental should be done at school with Ian's support.
Document via photos the "objects/works in progress" and post these documents on your book blog. Make SURE that they are clear and that there is a WRITTEN description of what you hope to achieve posted with them.
We will ALL critique each others efforts for this draft. The final draft will be due the following week so PLEASE be aware of this calendar!
Call with any questions or concerns as it is the BEST way to get me right now. Leave a message if I do not pick up and I will get right back to you!

V

Assignment #7 DUE July 13th!
Greetings from Portland!
Let us turn our attention back to our 84 days Blog. There are some beautiful things happening in them. If you look at them from beginning to end, you will find that some have morphed into complex and meaningful bodies of work. Others continue to strengthen as formal explorations.
Allow this critique to address the overall meaning and or functionality of each classmates 84 blog. Deconstruct the group of images, and try and explain to the maker how these images work for you. It is OK if you describe something that the maker did not intend to imply. It is the stuff that helps us understand our own work and how vastly rich it can be. IMPORTANT. Revisit our last reading and address your classmates work with some of that formal language (Marxist Theory/Modernist Theory/ Postmodern Theory, for some examples).
Keep up the good work. I will be posting my two cents on this weeks HW tomorrow. I am still on the move!

Assignment #6 DUE July 6th!
Greetings from Seattle!
Let's finish these covers. Hear your peers and try one more time. There is good stuff here--but we need to sophisticate these ideas. Please post three new drafts of front and back and have your favorites posted on the top. This is a GREAT time to seek Ian's help as he is really good at this. I will be posting my comments of this this passed Tuesday's drafts on Saturday afternoon, so check back for some encouraging words from the old teach.

Assignment #5 DUE June 29th!
Greetings from Pittsburgh!
I apologize for not being clear on the last post, so I will try to make this one perfect!
Let us attempt to make a front and back cover for our books. (Those of you that are not making traditional books, must still crit your peers, but you do not have to attempt this particular assignment. Just keep on trucking.)
You are still expected to post 7 images on both blogs, PLUS, at least 3 draft examples of BOTH the front and back covers. We will be critiquing the cover designs only. Discuss design, text and offer many suggestions.

Assignment #4 DUE June 22th!
Greetings from NYC!
Your 84 Blogs are really rocking--I can tell there is some real investment there. It is so nice and it frees us up to do other things. We still need to focus on the books.
Please, carefully read your book crits and begin to delete the images that are not working for you. Hang on to the ones that do. Let's just clean up those blogs abit.
You are still expected to post 7 NEW images on the book blog and 7 NEW images on 84. We are seing some real progress, so keep your nose to the grindstone--it is working!
Again, I am proud of the honesty and integrity of your critiques. Stay professional, honest and thoughtful. We are almost there, and pretty soon we can begin to work on covers, text, font and design.
Start thinking about those things......
