Assignment #1 DUE June 1st!

FOR MONDAY MAY 31ST BY MIDNIGHT:

Please post 7 photos for each blog and update your "84 Days" blogs via the crit that you received during class.

"Book" blogs should have a clear statement of the concept of your book, the physical description of the book (dimension, type of paper, text/no text or describe the intentions for an object based book) and the ability for your classmates to post on that site.

FOR TUESDAY JUNE 1ST ST BY MIDNIGHT:

Please write three paragraphs critique of each artists  "84 Days" blog.

The first paragraph should address any lingering formal issues within the entirety of the blog, including color, font, text, weak statement, and usability/navigation of the blog.

The second paragraph should address any lingering conceptual issues that could be strengthened. Offer suggestions to do so. Remember...addressing THE WHY is key!

The third should address the photographs that are NOT supporting the overall theme/concept of the blog. Tell the artist why! Then point out the photos that do it really well.

    The new background looks a lot better, but I’m not so sure about the pattern. If you could find a way to just have the parchment color as a background or maybe just find a black that matches the color of the pupils of the eye it would be awesome. Also I couldn’t find the artist statement, maybe you can incorporate it into the Blog Title image. I like the collage idea you tried out, but it would be awesome if you could make it larger.
    I don’t see any conceptual issues. It’s very clear what the concept is, even without the artists statement present.
    I think these images are a lot stronger than the very first ones you took. They all work really well for the concept. I also like how you spiced up the last pic by turning it on its side. The only image I have a problem with is the third one, the glare in the eye on that one is a little distracting, maybe it can be fixed on Photoshop?
    * ANDREW
    I don’t see any formal issues with the blog, everything looks great.
    I don’t see any conceptual issues. I like the variety of the images, it seems each week there is a different focus, but it all ties in with the overall concept. I also like how the names of the body builders were added under their photos. One thing I did notice that I wasn’t sure about (I get the feeling it was intentional though), was that the mouse cursor could be seen in all the photos, except for two which maybe I just couldn’t find it.
    I think all the new photos fit with the concept. Maybe comments should be added beneath the inspirational photos as those are the only ones that don’t fit overall, but I think with captions they would be understood better.

    * ASHLEIGH
    There are no formal issues with the blog that I can see, it all works great.
    I don’t see any conceptual issues either, other than it is difficult for some images to be seen as nostalgic. Everyone has different memories and a different idea of nostalgia, but I think this week your images are much better at creating that feeling.
    I think the last two images from this week seem to work best to illustrate the concept. Old cars like the mustang and anything antique can definitely be seen as nostalgic and the last image gives the feeling of a road trip to me which most people have probably been on a time or two in their life. I think this group of images is working a lot better than last week’s they seem to convey the feelings of nostalgia better.

    * BEN
    The blog looks great formally, no issues.
    There are no conceptual issues either.
    The only photo to me that does not work as great, from this week’s batch, is the second photo. Maybe it’s just because the texture is a little confusing to me, although it is a texture so I guess it works, but I just don’t feel it as well as the others. It is an interesting photo though. I think the strongest photos are the one of the pineapple and the third pic.
    * BRYAN
    I see no formal issues with the blog other than the artist statement seems a little long, maybe it could be shortened.
    The concept is great and all the images work perfect. They almost look like paintings and not photos. I like the first two images best, it’s interesting how alien when abstracted.
    * CRAIG
    There are no formal issues with the blog.
    The concept is interesting, but not all the photos work. Maybe changed the statement to be more about glass as a reflective property and a boundary or take more images of looking out at nature through glass.
    Based on the artist statement, three photos don’t really work:the last two and the image with the shower head. The shower head image is really interesting though.
    * DAVID
    No formal issues to be found, everything looks great. The artist statement is awesome and to the point.
    It’s an interesting concept and there don’t seem to be any issues.
    All the images work with the concept. The strongest images are probably the one of the shoes in the medicine cabinet and in the FedEx box. The more creative or bizarre the better, keep up the good work.

  2. * DON
    No pics to comment on yet :(
    The new idea sounds interesting, but I have to admit I like the first idea better. Have you tried playing around with Photoshop- I thought there was a way to remove glares from images and maybe make the images stronger even if they are through glass. You can download a free trial of CS5.
    * DONALD
    There aren’t any formal issues to be found. The artist statement is really strong.
    There aren’t any conceptual issues either.
    The third image from the bottom is strongest to me. It has both strong color and texture and is very clear. The fifth image from the bottom seems weakest it’s hard to tell what the texture is.
    * KENDA
    Love the color for the blog it works great. The artist statement is clear. There are no formal issues.
    The concept is strong and interesting. All the images fit the concept. I really like the variety of images this week. To me the sixth image is most interesting, but I’m not sure why maybe it’s the angle and the viewpoint. Great work, it’s very interesting stuff.
    * MELISSA
    There are no formal issues with the blog.
    The concept is really strong and all the images fit.
    The images I like most are the third image (probably because of the interesting vantage point,) the fifth image (it’s really sad to me, the chair seems to have life of its own and seems to be saddened by its surroundings,) and the fourth image (the chair seems to be contemplating whether to go for a swim or not). To me the chair is most interesting in places where it appears to be a living thing with feelings. The first image is probably weakest, I lacks the most feeling. It just seems like an object there.
    * SABRA
    There aren’t any formal issues.
    It’s an interesting concept, I feel that it could be taken even further though.
    Day 19 and 21 are really interesting, but I feel I’m trying to figure out what the trash is, so maybe in a way they work best because they becomes something else besides just trash. Day 18 and 17 are very interesting images, the trash almost has personality. The ones that don’t work as well for me are Day 16, 20, and 23 because it just looks like litter seen everyday. Maybe spice it up and make it look different like the other images.
    * SHELLEY
    No formal issues with the blog.
    The concept is very strong and interesting. All the images work with the concept.
    Perhaps the most interesting images are the ones in pairs like the coins, the scales, and the images of praying. It might be more interesting to have comments by the artist on the images so we might better understand a few things and it would be more personal.
    * STU
    There aren’t any formal issues with the blog. I like how some images are being repeated and the way they are being staggered on the page. It gives it an interesting movement.
    It’s a very unique concept and it would be great to have audio if possible.
    The strongest image is probably the first one and the one in the bathroom by the toilet-it’s an interesting image probably because of the unique angle.
    * SUZANNE
    There are no formal issues. The artist statement is simple and interesting.
    All the images this week fit well with the concept.
    The image I find most interesting is the one of the hand around the door knob. Everyone opens doors everyday, but I don’t know anyone that opens them like that, it’s a really unique and interesting image. It’s also interesting to see the different ways people chose to have heir hands photographed, it really says something about each individual. It’s also nice to see the white backgrounds behind a few- it really makes a difference it’s not as distracting.

    AMANDA
    I think that you’re getting closer with your background as far as colors go however the pattern gives the site a Middle Eastern vibe to me. Also didn’t find your artist statement. I think the layout is working very well and I had no problem navigating the site at all.
    I don’t remember the exact concept behind your idea for photographing eyes and with out an artist statement I don’t really have anything to say about conceptual issues.
    The collage is a very interesting concept but I’d like to see it take up more of the page so that I can see the detail of each eye as well as the whole image. I think my favorite picture so far is the last image on the first page which you turned portrait instead of landscape. Something about that angle makes the image much more appealing to me than all of the others and it seems to diminish the impact of the skin in the photo which is still a problem in the other photos.
    ANDREW
    The layout of your blog works well, navigation takes a little time to figure out but isn’t such a problem that it should cause people not to view the work. The only real problem is the artist statement which I didn’t follow at all. The statement leads me to believe that we will be watching you do something (of what I’m not sure) repeatedly instead of a somewhat biographical look at weight lifting.
    The concept being laid out in your images is working extremely well however it doesn’t match up with your artist statement. I’d suggest being straight forward in your statement.
    The only pictures that don’t work are the ones that are part of your inspiration but I think that can be easily fixed if you just inform the viewer that they are not part of the work but background information to the work. I love the images particularly Mr. O Larry Scott ’65, it’s the exact mental image I have of what a weight lifter from that time period looks like. Great works keep it up.
    APRIL
    Only suggestion for change for the blog is the font of the artist statement is just a little hard to read, not too bad but could be better. Artist statement itself is great; I know exactly what you’re going for in your images because of it.
    I don’t have any suggestions I think you’ve got a great concept that you’re executing very well.
    The first two images are too dark; consider more lighting on black objects since you have a black background which swallows up the first two pictures. The green and yellow mucus looking object is still your best picture it perfectly captures your statement. It really is fascinating.
    ASHLEIGH
    Don’t see any issues with the blog, it all works.
    Clear concept that draws me in and makes me curious.
    A few of the photos from your first week don’t seem to fit anymore; they seem staged compared to the rest of your images. My favorite photos are the mustang, very classic looking photo and the Jerry’s Drive In which is very nostalgic for me since I’m from Pensacola.
    BEN
    You’re artist statement is too far right, it ran off my screen. Might just be my computer but I thought I’d let you know.
    I don’t see any conceptual issues.
    The next to last image doesn’t work. I know it was made off of a picture of a texture but the final image has no texture to it. Pineapple photo works really well, I feel like I’m holding one just looking at it.
    BRYAN
    Blog looks great, no complaints here.
    Love that you’ve completely embraced the critique of your work and that you’re willing to try something completely different from your usual style. You are creating very unique photos as a result.
    The photo with the close up of the lizard is just a little too “normal” compared to the other images, maybe just play with it a little more in Photoshop. The photoshopped leaf veins are incredibly interesting and fit your theme perfectly. It’s a great addition to the natural leaf that makes it stand out from any other plant life.

  4. David's Critique part2

    CRAIG
    The font for your title is kind of bland but other than that the blog is laid out well and navigates fine. I’d think about taking the part about nature out of your artist statement, not all of your images show nature through the window, yet some of those are extremely strong images which would be a shame to take out.
    See first paragraph about concept.
    The last image doesn’t really support the concept because the actual window isn’t visible in the picture. The photo with the showerhead is by far the most interesting mainly because of the bright light from the window which gives the picture a sense of mystery.

    DON
    Can’t really comment on the layout until pictures are up.
    New idea sounds fun, should be some good pictures.
    No pictures to comment on.
    DONALD
    Layout works great for your project. Only slight problem with blog is load time is a little slow from all the pictures but that may be unavoidable.
    Love the concept; I’ve got nothing to improve it.
    The fourth red picture is probably the weakest just because it lacks a lot of texture, otherwise the photos are fantastic. The last green picture is probably my favorite texture wise but all of the images are really helped by your sharp focus.
    KENDA
    This background color is perfect; know you had been working with that for a while. Everything else is working as well.
    Concept is fine, no problems here.
    I couldn’t find an image that didn’t support your theme. I don’t think that will be a problem for you with such a direct focus for your shots. Compositionally they are all solid as well, looks great.
    MELISSA
    No problems with the blog works great. I’d suggest rewriting the last line of your statement though. Don’t say “I hope” just tell the audience what it will do.
    Solid concept/theme that is leading to some strong images.
    The chair in the grassy garden area is the weakest image; all of the foliage makes the photo too busy. The train tracks, bathtub, playground and track are some of the best pictures simply because they give the illusion of a story which makes them extremely interesting and hard to stop looking at.
    SABRA
    The only thing I would change is the title. I’d suggest getting rid of the 84 days part and just make your quote the title of the blog.
    I don’t see any problems with your concept.
    I don’t see any images that don’t support your theme, all of theme are solid interesting pictures of trash. You do have one uploaded twice from this week though. Day 18 is one of the best because of the background and the unique shape of the trash.
    SHELLEY
    Only change I would suggest for your blog is to move your artist statement to the top it’s kind of hidden at the bottom.
    Very unique theme and an eye opener no issues with it at all.
    The window picture seems a little off from the theme but I’m sure it’s just because I don’t know the back story. The fishbowl picture is the strongest, its obviously had thought put into it as far as framing.
    STU
    Site is still a work in progress but you’re on the right track, like the message hidden to the side.
    Concept is solid and completely original which makes is much more interesting.
    Can’t say any of your images don’t follow the theme, the corner of the video game store stands out from the others. It’s like a color explosion next to the mute colors of your other pictures.
    SUZANNE
    Blog is working well for the most part, the pictures not lining up are bugging me but that’s kind of a personal thing I think.
    Concept is good; don’t have anything to add to it.
    The images from this week are much stronger as a whole. When people are doing things with their hands its much more engaging than just a still shot of hands.

    -I am liking the color of the blog; I think it’s starting to work nicely. Your blog is very easy to navigate and figure out. The only thing that is bothering me is the subscribe button at the bottom of each page. If you go and watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg) it will tell you how to take it off if you want to. I couldn’t find your artist statement.
    - I think your concept is working well. I think I like the fact that you are leaving the skin around the eyes. It gives it this creepy kind of feeling..but I like it.
    - I think all of the pictures are working. Is the collage something you are going to keep putting together while you get the images of eyes? If so, make it bigger J
    * ANDREW
    - I like the layout of the blog, everything seems to work just fine. The only thing is to find the artist statement I have to go all the way to the beginning and I would like to see it on each page at the top or something. But I like your artist statement, it works for me.
    -I think you are on point with your concept. I like the images and they work!
    - Your overall theme and concept seem fine to me. It looks like it is all meshing together well.
    * APRIL
    -I think your blog looks good. The only issue I have is the subscribe to button (it just bugs me) so heres the video link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg) just watch it and its so simple to get rid of. Your statement is good, I think it fits well. Your blog is easy to navigate as well.
    - You are doing a really good job with keeping everything within the concept. I like how the photos keep me guessing as to what they are and they are super interesting to look at.
    - I think you are on a roll. All of them are working!
    * BEN
    - Your blog is easy to navigate and works well. The only thing I would suggest it to have textured and the definition of it lined up and centered together so that I don’t have to scroll over to see the end of the definition. Also maybe try to make the pictures all the same size so I can just have one big scroll of textures.
    - The concept and the pictures match up just fine.
    - All of the pictures are working. My favorite one is the yellowish one (not sure what it is) but it looks awesome. You have texture and patterns in that one. It all looks good!
    * BRYAN
    - Your blog works well. I like everything about it except that subscribe to button. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg) Watch that and away it goes! (if you want to that is).
    -The concept works and you are keeping with it nicely.
    - The pictures are just crazy. I like them all! The only ones that may not fit is the 1st one and the 7th just because I get lost in the colors that are going on behind the leaves than actually looking at the leaves. The vein leaf thing you got going on is awesome. They are so interesting to look at. It kind of gives me a feeling like they are electrified or something. It’s trippy but completely working for you.

  6. * CRAIG
    -The blog works nicely. I would like to see the title of the blog and your artist statement lined up together then centered but I’m just picky. Also that subscribe button. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg) Away it goes J
    - The concept is working with the pictures. I have no complaints!
    - The only picture I think that might not fit is the last one in black and white. You lose a lot when it is black and white in this case. I just see the curtain, not a window. One of my favorites is the third one. I like that you captured the awesome scenery from the CPFA building. It’s nice.
    * DAVID
    - I like the layout of the blog and it navigates well. Maybe change the color of the tool bar or whatever it is to white so it flows better. Also that subscribe button sort drives me nuts!
    - The concept is working well. All of the shoes are not where shoes are supposed to be so it works so well.
    - The first picture I had to take a few looks to actually see the shoes. They kind of blended in. The one of the kitchen things seems a little weird to me but maybe its just the angel that the picture was taken at. The last one kills me! I love it. For some reason I think of someone stuck in a FedEx drop box upside down trying to get out. I don’t know it makes me laugh. Overall, you are doing a good job.
    * DON
    - The layout of your blog is great. Very clean and professional looking.
    - Your new idea sounds awesome and kind of funny. Cant wait to see what you come up with.
    * DONALD
    -Your blogs navigation and layout look good. It’s very easy to figure out. My only suggesstion would be to get rid of the subscribe to button. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg)
    - The concept and the pictures match perfectly. My only question is are you going to put what each color symbolizes before their set because I didn’t see it for the blue.
    - All of the pictures are working so well. I feel like I’m looking at some crazy rainbow with so many different shades its ridiculous. It really is beautiful. I can’t even pick a favorite I like them all!
    * KENDA
    -I see no problems with your blog at all (except that subscribe button). It all navigates really well and I like that you kept it with the blog feel because it seems to fit right into that realm.
    - The concept and the pictures are working. You are getting your point across about geocaching and are coming up with some really cool and interesting images.
    - All of the pictures are interesting. I like how you give us little sneak peeks as to what each one is (I know you can’t give away the locations). It keeps me interested and I like looking forward to what I am going to discover from geocaching next week through you.
    * MELISSA
    - Your layout is working really well. I like how you have the artist statement on each page. I also like how you got rid of the blog toolbar thing at the top and made your buttons previous and next. It looks awesome.
    - The conceptual stuff is working. Your ideas are being conveyed through your pictures without a doubt.
    - The one image that I feel may not be working is the one where the chair is in the grass next to the wall with the lizard painted on it. I like for the chair to have a strong presence in the photo and in that one it really doesn’t , maybe because it looks so small compared to the rest of the other chair images. I really like the one of the chair in front of the brick building. I think this one works because the chair is holding its own in front of this huge building. Overall, I really like all of the photos.

  7. * SABRA
    - The blog works really well. There aren’t any problems with navigation or anything. The layout looks good.
    - The concept and the pictures are working well. You are getting your idea across through the pictures.
    - The only one I think could be changed is day 20. I want to see more of the sidewalk or whatever surface its own. I basically want to see where the trash lives. The picture that is Day 21 is so sick! But I like it. It seems like it is starting to take on a life of its own as a weird lollipop trashy flower.
    * SHELLEY
    - The blog is working well. The only issue I had with it is the artist statement. I would place it at the top so it is more prominent. And that little subscribe post button. Here is the link to get rid of it if you want. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00XJTjXOTtg)
    - The concept is working. I just need a little more information on each picture I guess to bridge the gap of understanding. I guess making a comment on how its different from the other would work. I understand the money and the praying but there are a few I don’t really understand.
    - The images are all really interesting. I think they are all working nicely. Im not sure if the clock is supposed to be upside down but I kind of like it that way! J
    * STU
    - I think the blog is getting better. Maybe just pick if you want the viewer to scroll up and down or from side to side. I also didn’t see your artist statement anywhere. Other than that it’s looking pretty good.
    - Your concept is working. All the images are falling into place. Nothing is out of place; it all works.
    - You have two pictures that are put up twice (just wanted to let you know). But I find them all interesting. I want to know the story behind the pictures though. I want to know why you curled up in that specific corner. I think the stories would be interesting. My favorite one is the corner with the cats. It makes me want to pet them and kind of makes me think you like animals better than people sometimes but I don’t know.
    * SUZANNE
    - I think your blog is working really well. Only thing is that subscribe button. I like the pictures in the block like form (that you did this week) compared to the way the others are laid out. I really like your artist statement. It’s short and sweet but it works!
    - Your concept is working. You are capturing what you set out to capture. The pictures go with your idea. Nothing is out of place.
    - I like the pictures with the hands that are doing something like the one of the person smoking and the one of the girl holding herself. It gives the hands a personality and it sort of tells a story. I like those hand pictures better than the ones that are just hands laid out because when they are just sitting there they have no life behind them I guess. Overall it all works and looks good.

  8. * AMANDA- I think the layout could be worked on a bit more. The texture on the sides is distracting and doesn’t really flow with the theme. The middle color is working. There doesn’t seem to be any issues with text or fonts on the page. There isn’t much of it now, so just keep the rule of fonts in mind if or when you decide to add more text. As far as the Artist Statement, I can’t find it anywhere so I am assuming you aren’t finished with it yet. I think once you have that fixed and posted on the site, the conceptual issues will be clearer. The usability and navigation work well. I didn’t have any problems navigating the page. I am not sure how to address any concept issues because I don’t exactly remember what the concept was, other than photographing eyes. The images still aren’t really working. I think circular images of just the iris would be a neat concept to test out. The skin and eyebrows seem to be distracting and the square format for images seems to compete with the eye itself.
    * ANDREW- The layout is working. The colors and fonts work nicely with your images. The grey, black, and white colors of the blog work nicely with your photos because they are all black in white this week. I am not sure if you plan on making all of your photos black and white from now on, but I think regardless the simple neutral colors work. I didn’t have any problems navigating the blog at all. I couldn’t find the artist statement, so I am still unsure about what your intent is for the photos. With the basic concept of capturing images from the body building world, your images this week are working. However, without a clear artist statement detailing your concept, I am unsure if the images will support your overall concept.
    * APRIL- The layout and formal attributes of the blog seem to be working very well. The only thing I would change would be the background color. The black background makes the darker images difficult to see. I think maybe white or a light grey color would work better. It is very easy to navigate and the artist statement is awesome. Your concept is strong. I can’t really think of anything that needs to be strengthened. Your images are supporting your concept very well. Your images are all very interesting to look at and I think your concept is great.
    * ASHLEIGH- The layout is working. The simplicity of the color palette, using black and white, captures the concept and blends it nicely with the formal aspects. It is easy to navigate. I like the concept of photographing things you see every day in black and white. The artist statement could be more descriptive to make the concept clearer, for example why you chose black and white instead of color. The image of Jerry’s is your best this week. All of the horizontal and vertical lines in the image make it very strong.

    ReplyDelete
  9. * BEN- The layout of the blog works. It is simple and easy to navigate. The artist statement is working. I like that it is just the definition, it gives the viewer enough information to understand your concept without telling the viewer what to see or how to see it. Your concept is very interesting and the images are all fun to explore. I like the large size of the images which forces the viewer to scroll horizontally. I think the images from this week should be the same size as the ones from last week. Also the first image for this week would work well as a horizontal and wouldn’t be as distracting as it is now. All of your images seem to support the concept nicely. The different textures captured in the images are rich and invite the viewer to actively participate in the image.
    * BRYAN- I enjoy the layout, colors, and fonts you are using in the blog. It all flows nicely and displays the images great. The size of the images also presents a strong aesthetic experience. The artist statement and concept have come a long way. You, without a doubt, take beautiful photographs and the effects that you have added take your images to the next level of interesting. I really appreciate the courage to experiment and alter your photos with the result of creating images completely fresh, new, and visually stimulating.
    * CRAIG- The layout, colors and text all work nicely together and present a simple area of display for your images. The artist statement could be improved a bit. I suggest maybe focusing on the contrast or similarities between nature and the geometry you are using to capture it without telling the viewer exactly what you are doing. The concept itself is very interesting to me and is strong. It is a fresh look at the actual geometrics of the windows and architecture we look out of. The strongest image this week is the first one. It is cropped nicely and the focus really is on the geometric shapes of the door and glass wall. The third image this week isn’t really working. The focal point in this image is the nature outside of the window and the geometrics of the window are out of focus. This image seems to be the opposite of the rest of the images.
    * DAVID- The blog colors and layout work. I think you may have more than three fonts and sizes though. I really like your concept and the artist statement works perfectly. The personality of the statement makes the concept that much more interesting. Your images are all very nice aesthetically. However, as far as supporting your concept, the images taken outdoors support the exploring and adventure stated in your statement better. I enjoy them more than those taken inside.
    * DON- The new concept sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing the images next week.

    ReplyDelete
  10. * DONALD- I wouldn’t change anything about the layout. The title works, the artist statement is great and the sizes of the images are nice. One thing is missing, the definition for the color blue for this week. The concept is strong and presents the viewer with an interesting idea to consider. The objects you chose to photograph all present the viewer with rich textures and vibrant colors which produce images that greatly support your concept.
    * KENDA- The formal aspects of the layout are working. I really like how each of the images are cropped the same and that they are square. Both the artist statement and the description of geocaching come together and help explain the concept great. The concept I find especially interesting because I've done geocaching before and can appreciate the time and dedication that goes in to the hobby. I also like the way in which you have chosen to document the experience, paying close attention to details and being sure not to give any spoilers. Your images are all beautiful and portray the intricacies of the hobby so well.
    * MELISSA- The layout is great. I like the previous and next buttons and that there is only one photo per page. You nailed the artists statement. It works great and explains the concept. The concept itself is interesting to me because each photo can provide such a detailed narrative just by where you place the chair and in what context. The locations and landscapes you are choosing for your photos are also working. Each of your photos provide great color and contrast between the chair and it's surroundings. All of your images this week are working. The only photos I would discard are a few from the first week. The one of the chair inside the glass door and the one in the garden in particular.
    * SHELLEY- I don't particularly like the grey background color, maybe try black? Other than that, the layout and formal aspects of the blog are great. I really like how you have decided to compare both America and Germany and divided your blog in those ways. The concept is very strong. It is one that a lot of people could relate too or at least learn from. Your images this week are the strongest yet, both aesthetically and conceptually.
    * STU- Your blog and layout have come a long way from last week. The way you have chosen to display your images horizontally, is working great. It took me a minute or so to find your artist statement, but once I did, it made the blog come together even more. The fact that the viewer has to search for it adds to the statement itself. The concept is unique and interesting and will provide opportunities for new and compelling images. The lighting in your images this week is stronger in comparison to past weeks.
    * SUZANNE- Formally, the layout is working. I really like the way you keep choosing to display your images, off centered and un-even, it presents an interesting aesthetic. The artists statement is short and simple and describes the concept nicely. The concept is also very interesting. Hands can definitely tell a lot about a person and you seem to be capturing personality. This week is by far your best week of images. They are all strong and once again present lots of personality. The only photo that may need to be cropped differently is the second one, I think it would be stronger if the partial face and lips weren't in the photo.

  11. • AMANDA: The overall layout of the site is interesting even though the background is a template. The tones give it a simple feel and the intricateness of the eyes creates something visually aesthetic. Although the artist statement is missing, the image you created for your header speaks to your concept and direction in this blog.
    The images in this set of pictures are interesting. I like the fact that in some of the photos the eyebrows are showing and that gives the top of the picture lots of texture along with the vivid detail on each iris. The presence of eyeliner on the second photo is also fun to see and examine. It’s interesting to see what our make up or eyelashes look like from such a close perspective and it is definitely fun to study on others because of their differences. The overall series is good.
    • ANDREW: The overall layout of the blog is half appealing and half unsettling. I feel that the font of the comments and words don’t match the clean font of the header. I enjoy the header because it appears that the subject is struggling but it silenced by the demand of “Seven Times A Week”.
    I feel like the concept as a surface is easily read but once you compare all these pictures to one another you begin to see a different trend. Although they all have the commonality of weightlifting, each set provokes a different train of thought from the next one. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s set in color looks like a documentary of a single weightlifter. While the most recent set in black and white documents the posed chronicling of weightlifting champions.

    • APRIL: I really like the font of the artist statement and the statement in general. I feel the words themselves along with their meaning contrast nicely against the black background. I like the lack of navigation and what not that makes it seem more like a clean gallery or a showcase of wonderful pictures.
    As for the pictures themselves I believe they are visually amazing. It makes the audience wonder what exactly the subject really is and even if you think you know you might be wrong! That gives this concept a boost in a fun direction where it’s not only aesthetically pleasing to see the images but it’s also fun to figure them out. The first photo was particularly interesting to me because I had just read the artist statement and it mentioned “alien” and “metamorphose” and the first image looked completely alien to me. The only photo I did not like too much was the purple and pink photograph. I felt it was semi out of focus and did not really draw me in with the angle of the shot.

    • ASHLEIGH: I like how clean the site looks because of the black and white contrast and also the matching black and white photography. The only minor detail that ( I feel) should be reviewed are the periods before and after your title. I feel they don’t follow with the sophistication the page.
    The photography I found interesting because, for me, it does not date the images because of the black and white but it makes me think that these locations, vehicles, and other objects might seem old to future audiences. In the same way that black and white photography of locations, vehicles, and objects appear dated to us. I feel that these photographs capture something that future audiences will view as antique or historical although they are everyday objects to us.
    I feel that this series definitely speaks to the concept and has a constant idea flowing throughout it. And I love Jerry’s.

  12. • BEN: The overall layout of the blog is very nice! The definition for texture makes your artist statement somewhat of a concrete idea of what texture is and then your photographs create a different idea.
    The photographs themselves are overall excellent subjects. However the focus of the camera is off and doesn’t allow the viewer (just me) to get a vivid image and doesn’t allow my eyes to run over the texture of the subject which I feel is the main idea of this blog. Using the method that (that one guy, I forgot his name, was it Bryan?) taught us with backing up far and zooming I think would give you the pictures I feel you are trying to capture. As a whole this site and its content are severely interesting and I would love to see more!
    • BRYAN: Although I personally don’t like the font choice of the header, the entire page looks good to me. I think a separation of a set from another set would be helpful with critique but viewing all of the images together is helpful to understand your concept.
    The images captured are excellent. I like the blow up effect of the first image and the veins on the leaves of the third and sixth photos. I think it gives the leaves movement and life not always captured in plant photography.
    I think the only aspects in the images that bother me are the backgrounds in some. I don’t particulary like the first images background because it reminds me of one of the pipe things on windows screensaver. The digital and colorful background of the seventh image is intriguing because it looks technologically advanced with the contrast of a leaf, something organic and simple.
    • CRAIG: No issues with overall blog.
    The images are quite nice. I like the geometrical attention in the first photo and the nice scenery outside. That image is a perfect example of the concept you are going for. The only images I am not a fan of are the ones from far away and the image with the drapes. I could barely see any scenery outside of the window on the distant images and the presence of all the furniture distracted me. The window with the drapes did not fit well into your concept with me because I couldn’t really see any nature, just reflection from the window. You probably already know this but when taking pictures at night it’s crazy hard to get a picture through a window in a well lit room or with a flash you might need to put some lights outside.
    • DAVID: Dude. Awesome. I like how your artist statement is simple yet funny. “Just two flip flops” doing our thing around town. I dig the placement of all of the shots except the medicine cabinet. I think the angle just gave me an uncomfortable feeling after seeing the flops high on the light and being below them. My favorite photo is the one where you placed the flops in the oven mitts like flop sleeping bags.
    I like the overall layout of the blog, no problems there.
    The overall flow of the blog is there. These photographs match the rest and create the same excitement of not knowing where those darn shoes are going to end up. I really enjoy this concept.

    ReplyDelete
  13. • DON: I’m digging the idea of shooting people at night. That would be awesome to capture a moment when people are focusing on a basic biological need and not whether or not they are being watched!
    • DONALD: That better be cake and jello in those red shots because it made me hungry. I think your concept here is amazing. I love the addition of color definitions before the photographs and asking the viewer to hold on to that thought and see if it remains by the end of the set. I think the blog overall is great. The header is unique and has texture within the word “col-ures” which is neat. I really love all these shots. They are so beautiful and make me feel extremely close to them and their texture as well as their deep color.
    • KENDA: I think the blog sort of matches your concept, however the presence of all the links and what not on the side is distracting and seems to make your blog feel like a site for information rather than a site for photography or concept. Your pictures carry a concept that I believe can be interpreted that you are searching your area for items of the unknown and making them very known and creating an intimacy between the items and your audience.
    I think your concept is a constant flow in your blog however this is my first experience with geo-caching and I’m not sure what it is all about. Your photos bring me closer to an idea and makes beautiful images as well.
    • MELISSA: I really like the layout of your blog. I think it creates a clean space for your colorful photos to become alive and the center of attention. The fonts and size of your artist statement and header are perfectly situated for initial attentions while the photo’s take over the rest.
    I thoroughly enjoy this concept as well. I feel that the empty chair creates loneliness in the image but also suggests that the owner of this chair has been somewhere, had seen these things, and has moved on. I believe it creates a story for the chair as well as the owner. I like every single one of these photos, from the high building contrasting the tiny chair and taking my eye upward, to the beach photo with the dead fish which looked just as colorful as the chair. Another interesting thought is that I forget the chair is made out of pill bottles. I see it at first but as the photos continue with such interesting placement and set up, I forget the chair has a even deeper meaning than just a place for your booty.

    ReplyDelete
  14. • SABRA: I like the set up of this blog. No problems
    I like the photo of the lollipop because at first I thought it was a big trash sculpture and as I looked harder I realized the scale fooled me and it was the dirtiest lollipop in the world. The first image with the newspaper was alright, I feel like it could have been a little bit more vibrant because the newspaper color is dull but the chair it’s on is a vibrant green and I felt it came across as dull overall because of the newspaper. The pop cap was also a nice image! I enjoy the contrast of the metallic grey with the crazy concoction of colors in the background.
    • SHELLEY: I like the font change on the blog, I feel it suites the flow better. I like how you separated the German influenced images with the American ones. It’s nice to see that contrast in culture however it is hard to remember what was contrasting with what. I do not believe you should change this though because the absolute separation is what is necessary to your artistic decision in the blog.
    The photographs are enticing; they really encourage me to examine the differences between my culture and other cultures and to see how similar or different we are. I like that you use the same people for contrast, you for Germany and old buddy for America.
    • STU: I like the cleanness of the site, the only issue I have is with the layout of the photographs. They seem to create their own direction and don’t follow with any idea or concept read from your images or your background. It would be interesting if their arrangement created corner on your blog.
    The images I think speak to who you are as a person. Because these are places that YOU would like to crawl into it makes me have idea of what you must be like. For instance you work in a hotel and a lot of your pictures are taken in hotel rooms, lobbies, work areas, or bathrooms. You also take pictures of some dirty corners, ones that I myself would never think to curl up in but you have a different idea of comfort ability and that’s intriguing.

  15. IT JUST DELETED MY ENTIRE CRITIQUE!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I just tried to post a full length critique that I just spent two hours doing. It got deleted, so here is my abbreviated version of that critique.

    -Suzanne: Your blog works very well, but I thought you were going to collage your images? I think it works well as is.
    All images are working well conceptualy, and all support the theme. The only thing I would edit out is the person's face with the pipe since it becomes distracting when you present something that is illigal and the viewer may become more interested in finding out who is doing it rather than what they're supposed to be focused on.

    -Stu: I know you're still working on your blog, so I'm not going to talk about that now.
    Your concept is good, and all your images support it. Also, your theme is clear even without an artist statement, though it might help.

    -Sabra: You're blog looks great! would not change a thing about it.
    Your concept is very strong and your photos support it very well.
    The only thing to look out for is that some pictures are a bit foggy. The angles however that you are shooting this trash from is very effective. It's forcing the viewer to look at trash in a different way, which is what you're trying to do. very nice!

    -Melissa: You're blog is beautiful. No changes necessary.
    There are no conceptual issues and all images are supporting your theme.
    The locations you are choosing for this, are very interesting and are strengthening your images. My favorite is the one on the train tracks, it has a nice sense of space and the colors work together great.

    -Kenda: the new blog color works very well.
    All your images carry your concept and theme very well. The way you're choosing to shot these images is very interesting. ps. I miss you!!

    -Donald: Blog is great. image size appropriate. The only thing I would remove is the "but does it do that in these photos?" It seems unnecessary. Also, I would add the blue definition.
    Images are wonderful. Very crips and vibrant.

    ReplyDelete
  17. -Don: The only suggestion I would make is to maybe fill more space on the blog with your images. there is a lot of white space. Also, I would focus in on the subject a little bit more, filling the frame with it more. The fifth one down is my favorite, and you did exactly that. Very nice pictures! are you still maybe switching back to what you were originally going to do?

    -David: You're blog looks good. Your artist statement is apropriatly witty and the pictures are great!
    You have no conceptual issues or theme conflicts. the only thing I would change is maybe pulling some of the yellow our of the pictures one the top. Otherwise, great work! I enjoy seeing what else you come up with!

    -Craig: Blog looks good. the only thing I would change about your artist statement is the "but in a geometrical way". You're capturing nature, and I don't see any strong geometrical shapes there, the only geometry I see is the window itself. That being said the two images on the bottom taht capture the curtain, I don't think fit the artist statement, since your focus is on the curtain itself, and we can't see nature becuase it's dark out. But I really like this concept! And your pictures are very clean looking.

    -Brian: I like that you took the cross element out. The image on top looks fantastic. Your artist statement is nice, but when I look at some of the images I think about deteriorating leaves rather than abstract forms. I also think the one where you left the natural background in tact work better than the completely photoshopped ones. I do agree that these are very unique! If this is what you're sticking with, I would edit or remove the first seven on the bottom.

    -Ben: The blog looks great. Your concept is strong and every picture supports your theme.
    THe only thing I would look out for is how blurry your images can get. Textures need to be clear and crisp. THe pineapple is the most effective image in here because it is very clear, and it has a focus point where the rest is receding back into space. very nice!

    ReplyDelete
  18. -Ashleigh: Blog look very clean, good color choice since you're dealing with b/w photography.
    There are no conceptual issues and your theme is thoroughly supported! The choice of locations are very interesting in which you take your pictures.

    -April: Your blog is perfect for what you're doing. Love the font. Your images are very together and keeping up the theme and concept very strongly. The only images I would look at are the 3rd and 4th ones. 3 is very yellow, and 4 is a bit blurry. But great pictures!

    -Drew: I wish I could see the artist statement on the front page. THere is a quote that fits very well, is that your statement?
    There are no conceptual issues here, and your theme is kept strong with your pictures. I think the first image is your strongest, just because I can't really tell that it's from a book or computer, except for the mouse pointer. It's very clean.

    -Amanda: The only thing that is still not quite right on teh blog is they eye. It looks like you put a photoshop filter over, but it's still blurred. If the 8 weren't as crisp as it is, the blurryness would not be a problem, but I feel like you need to pick one or the other.
    Your concept is strong, and so is your theme. The way you collaged the eyes on teh older post is very effective and I would stick with doing that! ncie work!

    Love the header picture and the graphic creativity on it. The eye blurred out a little makes your graphic pop out a little bit too so if it’s an accident, it’s a happy one as Bob Ross would say. I don’t feel any objections to the layout of the blog and like the old parchment paper texture and colors. They are close to average skin colors and help the actual color of the eyes to not be competing with backgrounds. The outside brown texture is fine with me. Your seventh picture is the one that stands out to me and is just a bit more interesting. It helped to break up the standard eye shot for me.

    ANDREW
    Interesting lay out but I think the white background is too expensive for me. I feel like there’s too much space. Maybe if everything was centered that might help me overcome a left-heavy feel. Font works for me b/c the pictures are mostly b/w or show some history b/c the font reminds me of writing code for pack-man in Doss Prompt with 5inch floppies. I kind of wish I didn’t have to click each time to see a new photo, but it does the job. Your pictures all seem to fit your theme so far as well, however, I do wish the content was your own though as I find it easy to just skim over them instead of look for the reason or purpose for taking the picture. I think I’d find them much more interesting if they were pictures from around here or of your friends as that could bring me back home and ground me in viewing them. What I mean is that I know you did not take any pictures of Rambo, but if your friend looks like Rambo working out, then a picture of him would be much more appealing to me because I’d be in your shoes then. Maybe make them bigger if possible or explore centering them with some sort of simple background to fill up some of the space.

    APRIL
    First thing is I found the font and title very interesting and hung out a bit on it. I like it centered and kind of wish the pictures would follow suit. I like your pictures being big and taking up the negative space. Your subject matter is awesome and I find myself looking forward to what you might post next. I believe your artist statement is very good as well. All the pictures so far are wonderful and there’s a sense of intelligent composition as well. I wish I didn’t have to click each time to see another picture, but again, it does work and gets the job done.

    ASHLEIGH
    Good placement of the header above the pictures. Your pictures are big enough to not really have to be centered so I’m glad you kept your header centered over the pictures instead centered in the entire page. Artists statement is quick and to the point. Your photographs have a very soft feel to them as well as a good sense of composition and framing. The bridge picture is the only one that stands out so far to me, but really, it could stand alone. I think it’s only b/c it’s a much farther off shot, but again, it still works.

    ReplyDelete
  20. BEN
    Love the concept, love the header font and the texture it has as well. Not sure what happened with the artist statement not being centered and running off the page, but you’re probably in the middle of working on it so I’ll leave it alone, or it could just be my set up. At any rate I think the definition works well. I enojy the scrolling UI (users interface). In my opinion it just makes it quick and easy to see your work and follow your journey. Your theme also has me looking forward to your next posts as there can be very interesting textures.

    CRAIG
    Layout is nice and clean. The way windows should be! Fonts all seem fine and nothing too extreme which I think is working in this case. I love the simplicity of the blog. Be careful with capturing your reflection in the windows. (Unless you mean to do it) I find myself looking for the reflections to see what’s behind the scenes. I’m weird though and probably the only one… Otherwise, your pictures all seem to work well and only the last one in b/w stands out to me. It’s more of an artsy b/w to me then what your subject matter is. The pictures with the exit signs really appeal to me b/c I’m always looking outside wishing I could be out there playing instead of doing whatever I’m doing inside.

    DAVID
    Your blog works well too. I think the blog format / layout works well for your subject too. Like the dad who takes pictures of a teddy bear on his business trip at different locations for his kid back home. I think your subject matter is that of a genius b/c you can’t take a picture that won’t work for it. Just put your shoes somewhere in it and you’ve got it. That kind of leaves you to focus more heavily on composition and breaking the rules in my opinion. I feel your pictures reflect a compositional creativity that can be very interesting to see. Your header, artist statement, and font all work very well together and accent the clean feel of your page.

    DON
    Yeah!! Take it and run! Not the burger, the idea. You could be very well protected from inside your car but still have an element of danger. I’d make some private detective business cards to hand out in case anyone asks.

    DONALD
    Thank you for centering everything as I prefer it but it’s just my opinion. Your idea also has me wanting more and looking forward to more. Your header / title perfectly represents what you’re trying to do. Are you uploading very large files? I had to wait for them all to load, but then it might just be my connection at this time. Your photos look great as well and they all ask me the questions you asked above them which is brilliant in that it adds lots of interest in trying to answer the question on each one. I enjoy it.

  21. KENDA
    Your blog layout does work well as well as font choice. However the font size may be a bit too small in my opinion. I feel like it needs a little more contrast. The explanation is good as it gives those of us who don’t know what geocaching is along with spell checker. Your artist statement is well rounded and supplements your subject matter. I also love your photographs. They all have a sense of intelligent composition and professionalism. There are absolutely no complaints here with the photos. Although, I am interested to see if #’s 75 – 80 look the same as they do now or if you find a creative tangent or theme to follow with the photography.

    MELISSA
    Title is great, but I wish it was somehow more separated and given more contrast. In my opinion, I think your font could be a little more playful, but it depends on what you’re going for. The layout is simple and I like simple. It gives your subject matter nothing to compete with. I liked your idea from the beginning and look forward to more pictures. I think your idea is similar in genius to David’s in that almost any picture will work as long as the chairs in it. I love the picture with the railroad tracks. Your theme also has something about it like David’s does. It’s like there was somebody the chair represents. A child perhaps, but I could see this being part of a movie about a child who maybe passed away and people remember the good times and the places they went with and the chair represents those places.

    SABRA
    Awesome idea and great way to exercise that idea into life. Your header is clean and simple and works well. The dots between the words give it a very modern feel to me. I love the grey and blue graphics but I wish they weren’t cut off at the very top. Your UI (users interface) works, but I would prefer to scroll through them, but it’s just my opinion and don’t change it because of me. Your pictures reflect a sense of composition and thought. My favorite so far is the tin can top. Is the third one really a mushroom that grew with a candy wrapper on top!? Very interesting! Also, the newer photos seem to have a white blur to them, did you mean to do that?

    SHELLEY
    Great idea! I am very interested in seeing our world through your lens. I love the German spellings and I think the font works ok. I do have to try a little harder to read the red on grey though. The lay out works as advertised and for your theme and idea it works well. The white borders around the pictures help to separate them from the background. I also enjoy your sense of creative composition in some of your pictures and hope to see more of it. Your pictures all have a variety that is only encompassed with the limits of one’s memory. I enjoy trying to see the pictures as you would the memory they represent.

    I feel like your title needs a little more explanation, but I’m not sure. I think an artist statement might clarify it for me, unless you had one and I couldn’t find it. Your theme and idea works great for this project. It will be great to find out what corner 80 and 81 look like and to see if you take this idea further with any newly learned photoshop skills or anything. The only one that stands out to me is the 12th picture. It doesn’t seem to have a corner that I’m used to finding in the other pictures, but other than that, they all seem to have a place here on your blog. An audio story for the most interesting corner of the week would be an awesome addition but I have no idea how you could do that.

    SUZANNE
    Your blogs title is very creative and the font is simple. I like how you structured it to show lots of pictures for the scrolling work I have to do to see them. The way you titled each weeks posts is also creative. In my opinion, I’d like to see a little more separation between posts though to kind of group them up. Your pictures concepts are well thought out and I think there’s so much potential with the idea of showing hands doing things. I however have to say that the crack pipe picture doesn’t fit partly b/c it shows part of a face and I have to stretch to say that that picture is art and fits within the context of what your doing.

    I see you have changed the background for the blog to be more neutral in color, however, I’m not sure if the pattern works or not just yet. Because most eye colors are earthy in tone the pattern may be ok but I would also try the eyedropper in photoshop to pick up a color in the eyes for the background. I am also wondering where the artist statement went to? Or did you not have one before? …I thought you did.
    The overall concept of the eyes is still working but I still like the really close up pictures of them. They have such beautiful color and texture. I know it can be really hard to take close ups of the eyes but that first picture on your blog is really beautiful.
    The only pic that I see on the blog that may possibly not work is the fourth one down. I only say that because the flash went off in the picture and we are focusing more on that light than the actual eye. All the others are working with your theme.
    ANDREW
    As far as the blog goes it is exactly what it needs to be formally. I know you said that you wanted it to sort of be like a journal..right? It looks a lot like the journals I do at home when I cut and paste pictures and sayings in it. Perfect for what you are doing I think.
    Conceptually, your pics are still working. I have to admit I liked the more obscure ones from last weeks posting but these are pretty interesting as well. Also wondering why you decided to take the quotes from different people off?
    The sixth picture down is probably the one that doesn’t work as much as the others. I only say that because it seems to be the least posed. Other than that they all pretty much display the more posed pictures and vanity of the sport. P.S. That second one down is absolutely DISGUSTING! ☺
    APRIL
    I think your font on the blog that you chose is working very well. It is sort of a whimsical kind of font that goes with these small things your are taking pics of. You may want to center your pics though since your title and statement are centered.
    The concept is still working in your pics, but it seems you are having an issue with lighting. Some of your pics are a little grainy so if you are using digital, you may want to use a light source and I think you will find your pics will come out a lot clearer.
    The third pic on the posting (not sure what it is of) is probably the ones that works the least. The only reason is because of the graininess from lack of light in the pic. Easy fix because the rest of them work really well.
    ASHLEIGH
    Formally the blog looks really simple and works especially because it is about black and white photos. I think that readers may wonder why you see the world in black and white though?
    Conceptually, these pics work because they are things you see everyday. I would suggest getting closer to some of your subjects. Maybe it would make them a little more personal..not the plants but maybe people and places? The plant shots were very beautiful in black and white.
    The only pic I don’t think works is the one with the trees and sculpture in the background. It was framed a little weird and I would have like to have seen more of the sculpture. However, seeing these everyday scenes in black and white is very interesting.

    The blog is simple and I like the addition of just the texture definition. It is very clean and makes the focus purely on the texture in the images.
    Your concept is strong. Some of the pictures are coming out a little blurred or pixilated. I’m not sure what type of camera you are using but you may want to try using a tripod when shooting close-ups of these textures. The palm tree is an example that works especially well.
    The pic of purple paint works the least for me. Only because it is so blurred and we cant really get a sense of that great texture. A better closeup of the paint would be a really great shot. I would suggest to reshoot it next week. The other ones seem to work really well, interesting textures you were able to find.
    BRYAN
    Blog is great so I wouldn’t suggest any changes there or in your statement.
    Your pics are becoming much more than just the typical “calendar” shot of these plants. That is a good thing. You are practicing your photoshop skills to make these more interesting visually and they are starting to look more like painting than photos. Keep working with this concept.
    Of all the pics, the first one I think works the least. It almost seems like there is something missing from the pic. All the rest are successful in making the plants into abstracted objects.
    DAVID
    I believe you have worked out all the formal issues regarding your blog. It is streamlined and your statement works well with you subject matter.
    Conceptually, your pics have always worked the best when they are personalized. By personalized I mean the flip flops are in human situations acting as if there were their own person. I know it can be hard to put a pair of flip flops in “human” situations but I would urge you to think about interactions you do everyday…maybe like pumping gas or buying lunch?
    The light bulb pic is the one pic that I believe works the least. The other work especially the one with the fedex box…hilarious! Again, I would think about personal interactions these shoes could have. They become more interesting when they have a life of their own.
    DON
    Blog is still looking very professional. I look forward to seeing the fast food pictures that are to come.
    DONALD
    No issues regarding the overall appearance of your blog. The descriptions of the colors add to the interest of the pictures. The background being white is perfect for the display because t doesn’t distract from the colors.
    I believe the concept will continue to work as long as your pics remain these abstracts of what the actual objects are. The close-ups really focus on the color and that is what is most important in your project.
    Some of the pictures are not working as well in the blue series because they are a little blurry. The green series was really beautiful as your were able to get some really great macro shots that caught both the color and the texture of the objects.

  25. MELISSA
    All the issues with your blog have been resolved. I think that one picture per page works very well with your subject matter. They are intimate pictures so I like that we can focus on one at a time.
    Your concept has been really successful so far. Going out further than your home and taking pics of this chair have really progressed into a story about this sculpture. All of these places are ones that lend the human element to the chair.
    I think you don’t have a least successful one this week. They all came out really amazing. I especially like the one on the railroad, it is a very strong photo. The one with the chair facing the fish is also very strong, especially in light of our current environmental situation. ☺
    SABRA
    Your blog is looking really good. I like the framing around the pictures and the way you have handled the nav bar at the top. I think it makes these pics seem like they are so much more than just trash.
    Your concept is working and these pics are so much stronger than your first set of posts. They are starting to tell a story about these forgotten objects and are becoming very interesting.
    The plastic bottle in the water is probably the weakest for me this week. The others were so in focus and said something about that particular piece of trash. This one was a little blurry. The one of the hairy lollipop is my fav!
    SHELLEY
    Hey…blog is looking good. You have kept it simple and the new white border around your pics is a good frame for the photos. I still don’t know about the gray and red though?
    I didn’t get the culture shock part in the sky pic but I got the others especially the praying pic (we talked about that in class☺). But the pictures are really interesting and you have taken some great shots.
    The pic that I think works the least is the one of the sky. It is really a beautiful pic, I just font understand what the connection is with culture shock. Maybe a little story at the bottom would help us to understand ☺ I miss you stories!
    STU
    I like that you are trying to change the blog to be more of a grid as suggested in class. I would maybe suggest that you put the horizontals together and vertical together to make it look more cohesive.
    The concept is still working and love the cat. That’s definitely NOT a clean corner.lol. I enjoy guessing where these corners could live and that’s why I think it works so well.
    The pic that works the least for me is the one of what looks like it is beside the bed. I think it could have needed some more light just to pic up what I am pretty sure was a dirty floor. The others are really prominent corners and they are working good when you add just one other element in the pic like the dryer in the bathroom.
    SUZANNE
    The blog has remained very blog like….much like mine which works with your subject. Because the background is white we can focus on the pics better and I like that they are side by side.
    Conceptually, the ones of the hands by themselves have always been the strongest ones. The shapes and textures of the hands are some of the most interesting qualities of these pictures not necessarily the other objects in the pics especially skin on skin.
    The weakest pic this week was the one of the pipe. The others are so strong because they focus on an action of the hands. I think if you could crop out the face then it would fit in better. I love the one with the yellow shirt!

  26. AMANDA-
    Amanda, your pictures of eyes are very intriguing. As far as the format goes, I think it looks great! The header is extremely cool.
    Conceptually it is hard for me to interpret if there is something more to theses pictures of eyes because I cannot see the artist statement, but at the same time the overall straightforwardness of the pictures and the overall presentation may not really need much explanation.
    It looks like you have decided the distance in which to take your pictures and I think this uniformity makes the page look very organized, but for that reason I do not think the last image fits the overall concept, the funny angled eye throws me off.
    ANDREW-
    Andrew, I think the improvements you made to your page are working. It is very minimal yet still able to find your way through.
    The concept of your photos is cool and I think I understand where you are coming from but if I were a random person who walked up on this site I might think that this is more of a tribute to body building. I don’t think that is what your point was, and I didn’t get that from your last set of pictures, but with the latest I do. I think the difference to me is the pictures you previously took that are most successful were of the body builders when they were not ready or not in a body building pose.
    These pictures are all interesting and I can appreciate the fact that they are put in reverse chronological order. My favorite ones would have to be the ones that look grainier but I still think there is more of an odd quality to the earlier pictures you have taken.
    APRIL
    April, these pictures continue to be REALLY fun to look at. And I think your page looks good, I think your text fits the idea of “little things” and enjoy the simplicity. One thing you might think about that I myself could probably use to do is to get rid of the “toolbar “thing, I think it would really help because of how uncomplicated your page is.
    Your concept is clear and concise and I don’t see anything wrong with the way you have your blog set up.
    These pictures are all really strong, and there are a couple that look a little fuzzy and don’t seem to fit in with the rest, the one of the pink and purple tube thing and a yellowish picture that appears to maybe be a hanging cloth, this is really just nitpicking but taken as a whole the set is great.

    ASHLEIGH
    Ashleigh, The page looks good, and it definitely fits the clean and simple idea of something being black and white.
    The concept is pretty much understood but I am not sure I am reading your artist statement the way you want us to read it. They way it reads now implies that you actually see in black and white, I am not sure if it’s what you mean. If you are trying to say that these are black and white pictures of the things you see every day you may try wording it “This is what I see everyday..In black and white” or “ A black and white look at the things I see daily”
    Your pictures look good but there are a couple that are a little bit grey, what I mean by that is there are a lot of medium tones. The pictures are still interesting but you can get really dramatic looking pictures by having a higher contrast of tones. One way to do that is to take your pictures when the sunlight is casting strong shadows like the afternoon.

  27. BRYAN
    Bryan, I am pretty interested to see what you end up doing in all these pictures. The layout of your page looks good, I can’t think of anything I would do to it.
    Conceptually, I am really fascinated to see what you come up with. So far these pictures are all pretty interesting.
    I think the most successful pictures you have are the one you have only made minor tweaks to. The ones where you have lightened leaves look really cool and alien where the ones with the gradient backgrounds are still interesting yet not as successful, but keep playing with stuff; these are looking really cool so far.
    CRAIG
    Craig, I think the page looks pretty cool, because of the idea of framing, I think it might be cool to get a template that might actually include more geometric shapes rather than the minimal gallery style.
    The concept is really cool, taking pictures of the organic outside through the geometric frame of a door or window creates an interesting dynamic.
    Your photos all look wonderful but the ones of the actual windows and curtains (the bottom two) don’t fit the concept of the other pictures above, great pics but the ones above fit better.

    DAVID
    David, The page looks good but if there was one thing I would change it would be that the pictures were a little larger. I know you wanted it to look like a blog and it does, but the pictures are great, they need to be bigger.
    The concept is very fun, and I look forward to following “Mike and Jeff’s” adventures this summer. I don’t really have much advice as far as the concept, I like it.
    The pictures are also fun, I heard someone in class last week say that yours are more interesting when the sandals are off the ground and I believe that holds true to these. I think they all fit the profile but the one where they are hanging in the oven mitts bothers me because that ceiling is too close to the top of the sandal, it doesn’t have the same free feeling that the other ones have.
    DON
    Don, The page looks cool, concept sounds cool, no pics yet but I can’t wait to see them.
    DONALD
    Donald, definitely an eye-popping page, I love the header and the size of the pictures. I think this is a great choice for the type of pictures you are doing.
    Conceptually, I think it is a good Idea, and I really like that you incorporate the description of each color and the connotations/moods that come with them.
    I think the third one and the second to last blue one are the strongest one from the set, any of the ones you have done that include texture feel the strongest to me, I know I am doing a series of texture pics but yours are really strong when they have a bit more texture.

    KENDA
    Kenda, the site looks really good overall but I think maybe the text on the introduction to geocaching could be a size bigger but that is nitpicking, If no one else told you that then ignore me.
    The concept is cool, I was not familiar with this stuff until this class, I had never heard of it, so this is interesting to me not only for the pictures but to learn about this “geocaching”.
    Your pictures are all really strong so it is hard for me to find the weakness but if I had to pick one that fit the least I would say it is the yellow one, and once again I am nitpicking, I really like this set, that one just has a little different feel than the others.

  28. MELISSA
    Melissa, I love the clean, minimal page. I also like that you set your page up to only show one picture at a time. The pictures you have of the chair make it feel like a lonely chair, wandering around looking at dead fish, but it feels sad and alone, and having it only show one picture at a time supports the singularity of the chair.
    The pictures from this set are strong but if I had to pick a favorite I would say it is the one with the fish, simply because the chair continuously reminds me of a child and this picture reminds me of how a kid would examine a fish that washed up on shore. I am not sure I like the one on the train tracks, not because the picture is bad but because train tracks are a tad cliché.
    SABRA
    Sabra, I really like the set-up of your page and don’t see any conceptual issues. Of this set of pictures I really like the day 18 shot and day 16. There are a couple that are lacking though, when compared to how awesome all your other have been. The summer work great pay could be pretty cool but it has too much concrete in the pic, and I think the same could be said about the cracker wrapper. I really enjoy yours pictures keep it up!
    SHELLEY
    Shelley, I really like the page, I love the colors and am pretty interested in the concept. The only issue I have had is that it is a little confusing to me where your pictures go. I understand that one goes to a group of pictures for Germany and America; I guess I just was initially confused where you are putting your new pictures.
    After I realized you split the pictures up and looked through them I really like them. I definitely enjoy the landscape picture and the actually like the fact that it isn’t in thirds and is more sky, It ads an interesting dynamic to such a simple landscape.
    STU
    Stu, I like the concept of the page, I also like the idea of putting that audio displaying the personal nature of these corners.
    The way the images are staggered creates an interesting image in itself, the strong triangular formations of the corners mixed with the series of geometric squares makes the page a work of art itself.
    I like the very first corner picture because of the washed out look it has and the way the bricks look at that angle.

    SUZANNE
    Suzanne, Your page looks good, nice and simple; I would consider changing the name of the blog even though it is a creative way to say 84. I like the way you have organized your pictures.
    The concept is doesn’t have any issues. Your pictures are all very expressive and fun, but I am not sure the one with someone smoking a pipe fits the concept, cool pic, but it just doesn’t seem as focused on the hands.

    -I really enjoy the layout of your blog. Since you added the title banner at the top it really pulls together the background pattern and title image. I would also like to see a collection of the images you compile in a collage like you did with the first images you submitted.
    -I am unclear as to what you are conveying beyond images of eyes because I do not see the statement. I would like to be able to view the statement on the top of the page.
    -The images that are not working for me are the vertical images of the eye and the animal eye. As interesting as the animal eye is I don’t believe that it is solid with the idea of focusing on the eye because one of the things I enjoy looking at is the distinction between the whites and pupils of the person’s eye.
    ANDREW
    -I like the layout of your blog because it’s got an archival feel to it. I have to click on the link that brings me to the week’s images and that gives me a set of images that together have a similar feel or theme.
    -The images are strongly supported by the title. I like that these images are of similar poses it reinforces repetition and that is a big plus for successfully conveying the theme.
    -Its not that any of the images are not working however, I really enjoy the grainy images that have lines running through then from a monitor or television screen.
    APRIL
    -The blog layout is nice. I like the whimsical font and the play on font sizes as well. It helps reinforce your statement even without stating the text of the statement. I also like viewing one image at a time because it looks clear and not busy.
    -Conceptually the images are engaging because some of them I am unable to identify at first so I linger on them longer. The only thing that is distracting is the flash on some of the images.
    -I like the images that have electronically aspects to them but because I know what they are they are not as intriguing. The images that I find most successful are the focused images. When they are blurry I see them more abstractly than as close ups of larger objects.
    ASHLEIGH
    -The white background of the blog is working nicely for a gallery feel. The text and statement fonts work for me. I even like the black dots on the title, not sure exactly how to explain it, however it might because its isolating the words Black and White noting the simplicity.
    -Conceptually the images seem too washed out and if they were crisp and with more contrast they would be able to compete with the color we see everyday and find interesting, keeping me engaged with what I see.
    -I believe the image of the water in the background and the tree in the foreground is the strongest as well as the image of the sculpture. The weakest is the truck because it appears to be the most grayed out image.
    BEN
    -I liked the changes to the blog however I don’t think you need what is in quotation to convey your ideas. The size of the images is distracting from the textures because the images are different sizes.
    -The word “roughness” is used and some of the images are smooth like the reflector image, or I think it’s a reflector, but it might be stronger if a different word was used.
    -But, the strongest images are the really rough looking images so the smooth images, although they have dimension, could be omitted and the ideas of textures would still be successfully done. I do think sharper images would help with the textures so I want to see you play with lighting.
    BRYAN
    -I don’t find anything that needs to be changed with your blog layout at All. I also noticed the change to the title banner and it is much better.
    -The statement is nice when I compare it to the images you pair it with. Even though organic material can be anything I like that your banner has a leaf on it so I know that what I am looking at will be plant life.
    -Images three and five are the weakest because they don’t apply the same techniques that you used in the other images in this post. If they were displayed individually I would not be so distracted by this. But I like that some of the images are pixilated.

    ReplyDelete
  30. CRAIG
    -The blog is simple and a nice contract to the images gray tonality. The back really makes the images pop out at me.
    -I don’t see the statement when I view the blog but it states that they are infrared images and that works for me because the subject matter can be anything really, although I enjoy the foliage better, so if you are going to take more images of foliage it should be stated in the statement.
    -The only image I don’t like is the second one because it is much softer than the others or the tree is very close to the foreground and the water too far back.
    DAVID
    -I like the layout of the blog and you don’t need to change anything. I even enjoy the blue color of the font because it feels lighthearted and fun.
    -Conceptually the statement is very straight forward and the images successfully support it.
    -The weakest images is the first one because I almost didn’t notice the flip flops. I also noticed that most of the images are indoors. Its more intriguing to see the shoes interact with places involving food or places we put our hands than is very out of reach places.
    DON
    -I don’t have anything to mention about the blog layout other than that I like the tabs you put in there to separate your blogs apart. I don’t know how I feel about the orange font though. I need to see more images to determine if it will be distracting but it works for these images you posted.
    -Conceptually I like the idea and the voyeuristic images are nice because it captures people being themselves without knowledge of the camera.
    -The images are too small though. The first one is the strongest because I have knowledge of the voyeuristic view because of the sign in the front of the window and I like that I have to look past the window to see what is in the window.
    DONALD
    -Good job on the blog no changes need to be added.
    -Your idea is strong conceptually and very straight forward. The colors fill the screen and that envelopes me into the colors and textures I see.
    -The weakest image is the one at the bottom because it’s not that interesting to look at texturally. The others are very nice. I really like the painterly strokes I see on the first blue image.

    ReplyDelete
  31. KENDA
    -I really like your blog because it’s a daily account of the adventure you go on. Even the poll you post contributes to the overall idea you are conveying a hobby that some people don’t know about. It draws you in to investigate.
    -Conceptually your ideas, giving us a hint at the geocaching world through very close up images supports your statement. The is nothing I would alter about it.
    -All your images are consistent. The ones that are strongest are ones with text in them because I read the clues and become curious as to what it is I am looking at and where it is located.
    SABRA
    -Your blog looks great I like the outline on the posts because it frames the images so that they are similar sizes.
    -Conceptually your idea is consistent with the idea of trash and treasure. It’s also supported by the places you find them because I recognize those places and hardly notice the garbage around me.
    -The images are sort of hazy but that is the only thing I have to say about improving them but the strongest one is of the cracker wrapper, and the thing that is sticking out of the ground that I can’t figure out.
    SHELLEY
    -I love the set up of your blog because it separates the two places and the images associated with them. I also, liked that you kept the red font. At first I didn’t like it but the more time I spend on the blog the less distracting it is. It’s alerting and attention grabbing.
    -Conceptually your ideas are strong and the images support that difference. I like switching from one page to the next to compare the images.
    - The strongest one I found was of the scale. Its seems so simple and I rarely thing about the difference in measurement in different countries.
    STU
    -I don’t even think you need the number 7 at the top of the page. Something about comforting corners maybe? I really like how you have lined up the images as well I like to see them displayed close to each other horizontally.
    -Conceptually seeing the images close like that makes it feel less lonely if that’s the right word I am looking for. It’s a better improvement to them being separated from one another.
    -The images with objects in the corners or near the corners are stronger, as well as the ones with lots of lines or textures. The weakest is the image with the cat, even though I like it, I don’t think it is consistent with the rest.
    SUZANNE
    -I still wish the title of the blog was different or spelt out with hands. The layout of the images is nice though. I want to see it grow.
    -this set of images has a very focused feel to it having both objects and textures in them is nice because it shows the depth of hands and what we surround ourselves with, what we touch.
    -The strongest image here is the last one on the left. The lighting is nice and there is something narrative about it without much information. The weakest is the one with the person’s face in it. I don’t think it is necessary to incorporate the face with the action if the hands are the most important.

  32. AMANDA: I think the overall blog is successful. Easy to navigate, everything nicely sequenced. Also dig how you just kind of make the title your A.S. The only thing I could think to suggest is that the spacing between the photos of the newest post be possibly spaced out more or bunched up in a pattern like one of the older posts? Don’t honestly think I can say one of these photos doesn’t fit, because they’re all eyes, and if they’re not, then whoa. All in all, nice stuff.
    ANDREW: Dude, I love this. Has a strong artist statement (enough to give an idea but vague enough not to pigeon hole you down.), great zine-like structure, always a black and white man, love the retro vibe, and it’s pretty darn easy to find each week. I think the only time I questioned it conceptually was the May 19th week where the images, although they seem to be relatable, didn’t seem to parallel the other weeks exactly. But eh, you totally came back, and this week definitely love looking at the arrow on the images and then getting frustrated that I can’t see or find them on others. Props.
    APRIL: Strong blog, keeping it black I like, appreciate you doing page by page, appreciate the fact that I’m being made to take in each image one at a time. The only formal thing I’m not sure about is the font with the photos but I can’t necessarily put my finger on it so it’s probably just too opinionated to take to heart. But all the images are great, most have this wonderful off landscape quality that seems to alienate me from any reference as to what the actual object is. However, if I have to be a deusch and mention the weakest photo, it’s probably the ceiling pic, and that’s just because I find myself staring at ceilings a lot, so maybe that’s why the whimsical is lost on me. Other than that, even that photo looks amazingly shot.
    ASHLEIGH: Dig the simplicity in the style and font, and as I said in Andrew’s I’m totally a black and white guy, so formally and conceptually it’s all good. I like all the photos, find it interesting how some have the artsy and others have a more commercial vibe, just creates nice variation as a viewer. All the shots I think are good but there is one shot with a fence and boat to the right where I feel there might have been a nicer shot if there was more happening, or maybe from a different angle? Don’t know, just suggestions. By the way still f***ing love that flower photo!

    ReplyDelete
  33. BEN: Formally nice, dig the black, font is perfect for what you’re doing, appreciate the definition. Conceptually you’re solid man. As far as photos I think they’re just getting better with every one in their own unique way, and for some reason I’m getting weird thoughts about graphics from old video games which is really nice for me as a viewer. Would talk about the purple paint thing as far as weakest pics, but the past is the past; pics are getting better and better. Good job.
    BRYAN: Formal is sweet, at first didn’t know how I felt about the header picture and the font, but I find it so cheesy that I just can’t help but love the hell out of it. I feel like you have a good hold of where you’re going and I love how with your photos there’s a little bit of an underdog feel like “how many cool shots with the same plants can one take?” and you’re like all “BAM! A whole lot” because the variation is really nice but the fact they all relate well conceptually is even nicer.
    CRAIG: Nice, well done formally, and although the statement seems awkward for me to read I can’t be hatin’ because it totally is covering what you’re doing to the hilt. Conceptually speaking, I like that you have taken on this subject with the whole geometric shape in relation to nature and that you are getting across this great comparison/contrast with your photos, really nice dark geometric shapes against the very bright nature, stuff. Only ones that I don’t feel like they’re doing their part for you are the door drapes ones which really don’t seem to go especially with your other photos. But I maybe wrong just would like to hear more about those in particular before I sound more like ass. Overall nice photography.
    DAVID: Good formal. Statement makes sense. Nice style. Even though I feel like I’ve come across this concept before here and there, I’ve been liking how you’ve handled it and you seem to be getting better with your places. Gotta say you really choreograph things really nicely with the scenery, seems to be what makes some of these shots really shine.
    DON: Although, I think I missed out on the statement, may not have seen it, I really think conceptually this is the keeper. Stalker-esque is always awesome and should present loads of awesome stuff and if you get hungry… Formally, you might just for use the colors of the fast food joint(s) you take photos at. Other than that just am really excited to see what goes down.
    DONALD: Damn. No complaints formally or conceptually, to the point, concise, and colorful. Absolutely amazing textures as well. Especially loving the very last blue photo. Only dick thing I could even remotely sat is there seems to be more differentiation in the last two colors and not so much with the blue, but all the shots are very nicely done and very interesting. Snaps.

    ReplyDelete
  34. KENDA: Formally a huge improvement in the look of your blog, really like it a lot more, seems to lend more focus on the photos. Statement is a good combo of explanatory and personal. Conceptually it seems interesting and even more so with the very almost intimate pictures of these little pieces of things artifacts. All the photos seem as a whole seem strong so no complaints as far as that. Feeling it.
    MELISSA: Dude! Yes! Formally your statement with the font and entire set up of this blog has this cozy story book, uh, feels like the Brave Little Toaster, yep. Conceptually with the statement and the pics combined there’s this really amazing genuinely happy/sweet/sad layer of feeling as you go through the pages that’s a real plus with me. No complaints bout weak pictures, getting more interesting, keep it up!
    SABRA: Formally speaking, very clean, you make your statement clear, neat. Another concept I feel like I’ve seen a lot but I’m enjoying what you’re doing with it, I especially like the lighting in these shots, and dude, especially the flyer because the context adds a new level to where you can go with this which I find nifty. You had a few weaker photos from last couple of weeks but with these new ones and the scenery, I think there’s no need to even cover that. Sweet.
    SHELLEY: I really like that you tweaked the coloration a bit, looks a lot better with the black background. The statement is something, that like the pictures, intriguing to me in that I can’t necessarily understand, or not entirely understand, culture shock. But I say this because I like that with your blog and the concept you present something of a possible window for me to get an idea what that might be. And as far as photos, I can’t say any of them are weak because there is a good compare/contrast thing going on here. Only thing is that like, upon seeing the church photos, it would be nice for some hint at the difference since there doesn’t appear to be one that is as conspicuous as the coins or scale. Other than that nice work, very interested to see where it goes.
    STU: Oh shit…
    SUZANNE: Formally love it, font, statement (nice in that it’s not one bland state the obvious, sweet and short), and all. Wish now having seen last week’s photo arrangement that you had done or had been able to do the same thing with this bunch. But still lovely shots, seems like the variations of hands and their actions are working out really well. Feels like it conceptually works. Nothing weak about it. H’yeah!
