Greetings from Philly!
Excellent Work! You all are rocking and the caliber of your comments are exactly where we need them to be! Keep it up.
Your 84 Blogs are in good shape. I am very pleased, as they are refined and all have direction. I realize that it took us a while to get them where they are today--but editing and re-editing is the key.
Lets keep our attention on the books, and crit them again on the 15th. Take into account all of your suggestions and show us that you heard them. Try it all!
I am available for a phone chat with anyone who needs to hash out some ideas--send me your number and I will give ya a call. Do not be shy, I am happy to, do it.
x,
Val

ReplyDeleteVisually #'s 1, 6 and 7 are working for me in your newest set of images. They are visually interesting and engaging. The other images are more generic and less enticing. Compositionally I really like #4, it could be the introduction into a whole story in and of itself. I like the bright colors and textures. Keep shooting and adding more interesting images!
* ANDREW
Sorry Andrew, I didn't really see anything new to critique on this week. I'll check back later before midnight.
* APRIL
Hmmmm..... Are the lyrics going to be more important than the imagery, or will they provide more of a supporting role? With you last entries, the words seem to be more important than the visuals, that's just the way I see/feel it. Just curious.
* ASHLEIGH
I still think the imagery would have more impact if you could get some additional people in the images, even if just blurry in the background. Right now they just look like nude people in public places when the public isn't around. I do like your use of non-traditional angles to shoot from, it adds interest.
* BEN
Images 1 and 4 are the strongest to me, in subject and composition. My only suggestion would be work with depth of field and/or tripod.
* BRYAN
I like the new images, all except for the one with the glass in front of the guitar. I think it may be that it divides the image perfectly in half, and would be better served either more to the left or right of center. Images are definately much stronger now.
* CRAIG
I like the way you're exploring the medium and subject matter. Of your new images I really like images 5 and 7. The color and composition is great on both of these. They'd make nice prints. Keep pushing the box.
* DAVID
ReplyDeleteI feel that the images are contrived. There's no feeling of naturalness to them. I think this is primarily the poses that the model is taking. The purple dress contrast nicely with the yellows, reds and whites of the setting, but the poses need some work. I can't be any more specific than that, just a feeling. Try something more natural.
* DONALD
Obviously the setting isn't in tune with the imagery, and you mentioned something about putting them in the correct setting, perhaps via Photoshop. Have you considered shooting them against a solid color (if you don't have a blue/green screen)? Could lead to some interesting possibilities.
* KENDA
I think the 3rd and 4th images in your new set are the strongest. Partly this is due to the fact that the subject matter isn't shot dead square in the middle of the frame, which the others basically are. The images that you've shot from unconventional angles, now and previously are your strongest images. Keep working with angle and framing.
* MELISSA
In your new set, images 2, 4 and 5 are strongest, and I think 4 would be even stronger if you had zoomed in / cropped tighter. I think macro shots are where it's at with your choice of subject matter, as it focuses on the color, texture and geometry of your subject. I think when you encompass too much, it make for a busy image without a clear focus. Keep it up, I'm fascinated with the mechanical and look forward to more of your work.
* SABRA
Out of your new images, "Maternity", I feel the strongest images are 2, 5 and 6. There's a natural feel to them, and an intimacy of thought in each persons face. Some of the others are also descriptive of the words intimacy and maternity, but just not as strong.
* SHELLEY
Images 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 all work for me, but 4 and 5 are weak in my view. It could be a very interesting choice of subject matter with practically no limit to the subject matter. Let's see what you can come up with!
* STU
Waiting with baited breath for the next set of images after your tour. Cheers and good luck!
* SUZANNE
No images to comment on for the book, waiting to see what you add / come up with! Buckle down grrrrllll!

ReplyDeleteGreat sleeping people picture. I really like the fuzzy quality of the picture because it makes it so much sleepier. The blue color of it also does this. This picture really captures life on the road. Exhausted people crashing on the floor or couch or anywhere they can. Nice job.
Sabra
I like the idea of your picking a type of intimacy each week. I see you are capturing affection pretty effectively in the last picture. I know that it can be hard to get your subjects to convey the right emotion through facial expression but keep trying because I think you were really onto something with the picture of the husband standing in the doorway looking at his wife. It has potential to be a great picture. I also like the pictures of the couple in bed. The hand holding pictures are very intimate. The one where u see the hands and then a small part of there reflection blurry in the background is fantastic, great job!
Shelley
I like the nightlight pictures a lot. I think I would like them better if they were from a different angle. Play with them and see what kind of reflection the light makes on the wall from the side even
Melissa
I am very fond of the anchor and chain close up this week. The detail is beautiful. Back up from it just a little so I can tell it is an anchor, I don’t think I would know that had I not seen the previous picture of it.
Kenda
These still feel touristy to me, have you considered getting some really strange angles? Get on top of the monument, shoot a bug’s eye view of the buildings, just mix it up somehow.
Donald
I love the picture of the man in camouflage standing in a wooded area. I like that you decided to show only half the face and the other half is dedicated to his environment in which he wants to blend. Is this a printed photo? I like the faded quality it has and the scratches are interesting.
Don
These are great! They look like pictures of Mars. My favorite is the picture of the white building and surrounding road. I prefer that type rather than the pictures where you can see white space.
David
These are very humorous, especially the one where she has her foot propped up on a bottle of bleach. I wish you had gotten a picture of her pumping gas, glamorously of course!
Craig
I really like the angle on the picture of the cemetery. That fence against the white of the tombstone is beautiful! I also like that you did not cut anything in the foreground, the tree or stones, that would have ruined this picture.
Ben
Mmmm, beer and pizza done right. This week’s pictures say attempted class in a way last week’s didn’t. Nice. The menu also looks great but I would change the red font. It seems like it conflicts with that background pattern to me.
Ashleigh
I want to see more naked people. I already saw these two. I like the picture in the kitchen with the glove. Cooking naked is ok but you must wear gloves! Try closer pictures, some of these look like they could be more appealing if they had more of the subject in them. I think some naked driving pictures could be good, plus you can find some pretty deserted roads where you won’t get caught.
April
The first picture says it all, who hasn’t ripped up a picture of them and someone they no longer speak to? Your Photoshoping is nice but try the clone stamp tool next time and you can put some flames on the picture itself.
Andrew
The pictures are nice but the environment in which you take them does not reflect the project that well. The images of yourself preparing to ride or the ones on the scale are fin in your apartment but possibly try taking more where you actually ride.
As a quick note to one and all, especialy Val, when I was having trouble posting last two times, it wasn't the number of words, it turned out to be a setting in FireFox. You have to enable 3rd party cookies for posting to work on blogspot with FF. Just a heads up. Cheers!
