Still in SF,
I was hoping to see book layouts from those of you working with BLURB. (See Sabra's last post, as she has a nice example of what we need posted next week.) If I was not clear, I apologize, but this is what I am expecting for next week. Please put it together and if you have any questions or problems you may contact me or see Ian.
For those of you that are making your book objects, I would need to see clear documentation of your "books" posted on your book blogs.
I am expecting that EACH of you comment on each others final draft of the book. It is unfortunate that you all expect feedback but only a few are willing to take the time to give it. This is your FINAL CRIT. It will not bode well if you do not take it seriously.
I am very proud of all of this work. There is some great stuff here. You should all feel very good about the progress. Good luck in your final week!
We will have a nice get together and show of the hard work as soon as school starts so hang onto your work!
Val

Sorry about the misunderstanding Val, could have put up screen shots of the book. I'm close to done. I'll be sure to put them up next week.
ReplyDeleteAndrew- Dude, its looking great, I really like the direction you are taking to make a handmade book. I think you are right on the money when you say that it will give it more of a private look, I think your book is going to be extremely cool with the precise attention to detail you are implementing. Good luck, looks great so far.
ReplyDeleteAndrew, liking the idea, but curious if you are going to use a diff. / heavier material for the covers / bindings? Looks like it will be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI've reviewed and commented on everyone's book blog that had new material up to review today, will check back tomorrow to see if the others have posted anything new. Great work everyone, let's finish this with a bang! Cheers, Don.
ReplyDeleteAndrew I can not wait to hold your book in my hands! I feel like it is going to be very textural.
ReplyDeleteDon your process for constructing the spheres is really cool! I couldn't figure out how to post a comment on your blog without having an account. So yeah, I think the results of the sphere images in 3 dimensions will be encompassing.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the trouble IDing myself. Amanda Stiles here

I really like how your pages turned out. Try just punching holes in them and putting them in a scrapbook you can buy at the store if that doesn’t look right maybe just rings could bind it with no cover.
• April
If I were you I’d try to make a cd book and put it into a cd case. You could burn your songs onto a cd and put it inside also. I think it would give a more musical feel to the project.
• Ashleigh
I love your 2nd cover idea. The back cover showing some ass says the end to me but I like that you stayed away from just simply showing front and back of same position because I think that could be boring.
• Ben
Your colors look great but I might try a fancier font for the cover. I like the word college the way it is however.
• Bryan
I didn’t think you could make so many pictures of the same thing interesting but you did. Good job. These prints look really good.
• David
Your book looks beautiful. I like how you chose to not put an image on the back. Your book looks very classy and sophisticated.
• Donald
I like your last album cover best. The title with the shodow falling on the grass looks really nice. I think when anyone thinks of one of those big dream jobs they immediately go to rock star, president, or professional football player. This cover conveys Dream very well.
• Kenda
These look nice but since this book is about the photographs make them bigger.
• Melissa
I like the cover you chose because it looks like one of those old do it yourself books. It goes along well with the rest of the project.
• Sabra
I like that you have kept the empty spaces and colored blocks throughout the book. They balance the pictures really well and move the eye to all the images in each page.
• Shelley
These pages look really nice. I like that you were able to place some pictures side by side that looked similar even though they were different places. Good job.

ReplyDeleteThe book is looking really good. I like just the taped corners and it says a lot that your chose butcher paper for the meathead photos.:) did you say you were going to eventually bind it or just leave it in a roll? I think its kind of interesting in the roll...reminds me of going through a bunch of old drawings.
Don
ReplyDeleteIt wont let me post on your blog for some reason so i will post here.
The book looks really cool on blurb. The front cover peaks my interest and its something i would pick up if I were at a bookstore. Are you doing the blurb book and the actual manual putting together of the book?
AMANDA – I love the book cover, the idea of the front cover reflecting on the back cover! And I finally saw the subliminal message in the water, looks great!
ReplyDeleteANDREW – These look great. They look like old documents. Suits your style of pictures. Are the photos printed on glossy, matte, or just regular paper? I think a matte or lustre finish would look great. Also maybe burn the edges of the paper its on?
APRIL – I want to see the box painted! Btw the car driving in space is really cool!
ASHLEIGH – I like the idea of the front cover being a frontal nude and the back cover being the back of someone. I think that’ll work best!
BEN – This is going to be great! It could be a little bit more organized. And also I interested in the prices of these meals!
BRYAN – These look huge! And it’s going to be nice to see in person and the detail of these images. Great work and I think glossy was the perfect choice for these prints
DAVID – This looks very professional David. I like your photos they came out crisp! Only thing I suggest is doing your horizontal photos like Shelley did hers. Going across two different pages instead of having them rotated.
DON – WOW! This is going to be interesting to see in person once everything is printed. I can’t wait to see it in person. They look huge and very time-consuming lol. Great work Don.
KENDA – Very professional. Looks like it could be sold at a Pensacola gift shop! Great color scheme.
MELISSA – Nice! It kind of looks like a children’s book. Which isn’t bad. Especially with the colors, and small quotes.
SABRA – I love the layout throughout the book and the repetitive squares. It looks very formal and soothing. Which ties into intimacy
SHELLEY – Great selection of photos. And I love the way you did horizontal photos on two separate pages. Looks like a book any pilot would want to put on his coffee table.
STU – scrapbook is a great idea for this series. Will it be just photos or more stuff thrown into the book?
SUZANNE – I can’t wait to see this in person. The discovery of different religions and their practices is interesting. Black cover is nice, in a way it reflects the traditional black bible cover.

I'm an idiot. I thought we were supposed to critique the final book. Should I still go ahead and do that? :(
ReplyDeleteAndrew.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful book. I love its scrapbook"ish" nature and how well that responds to the blog that you began. It is also a very inventive interpretation of the traditional book. Yay! All around! You are not an idiot. This is it for Final Crit. If you would like to comment to your peers on their final efforts, now is the time.
Don,
This looks totally awesome and I absolutely cannot wait to see one in the round. It is impressive how well it works as a book too. Nice.
